Today is my big brother Clem’s 50th birthday. Two weeks ago, my middle brother Gabe celebrated 45 (and I forgot to post then😬). So here’s to the two men who pioneered the path before me in following Jesus — even into ministry(!); in loving our family and loving their families; in being good men, fathers, husbands, and sons; and, of course, in being Seattle sports fans — I wouldn’t be one if not for them!

Happy birthday, Clem! And a belated but no less exuberant happy birthday, Gabe!

On the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington

On the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington and the 65th anniversary of Emmett Till’s lynching, I wasn’t able to make it to Lincoln for the March on Washington 2020 but was at Black Lives Matter Plaza earlier for a gathering with folks, including clergy, from @redletterxians, @votecommongood, @fianational, and others who had been on a 9-day pilgrimage from Charlottesville to DC, publicly demonstrating their commitment to “walk the walk” of race reckoning, resolve, and love. I was reminded today that there’s still so much work to do but we aren’t in this alone. #keepmarching

A week ago, the @christcitydc staff got away to process the last few months, to pray and prep for the next few months, and to play (a desperately underrated spiritual practice).

Let’s face it: life is tiring right now. We need to find spaces of rest and people we can lean on. This is a team I’m grateful and privileged to be part of.

As I got out of the car this morning to walk into

As I got out of the car this morning to walk into the @christcitydc office, I thought to myself, “I really LOVE Sunday mornings.” Getting to worship together (albeit virtually) with our church community, getting to speak and sing and hear God’s word and God’s truth, having a weekly anchoring practice in the midst of so much turbulence and chaos. Sunday mornings are my favorite.

And then, when I got into the office, I noticed that the internet wasn’t working. Which led to the discovery that our router battery unit wasn’t working. Which led @andreaackermann to call up Verizon and learn that the earliest they could come out was … not this morning. At this point, it was an hour and a half before we were due to start and we had a few options: (1) try to stream the service via someone’s phone (which we ruled out because we had some big video files to play); (2) pack up and head to someone’s house to run everything; (3) pre-record all of the pieces that would otherwise be live.

We tried #3 first, recording the worship set while simultaneously cutting and uploading all of the videos (welcome, profession, Scripture, Lord’s Prayer, Kids City lesson, and three MMIQ talks). It was 10am when we finished recording the set. Half an hour to edit and add the music videos AND record the announcements and benediction. (Oh, I also broke a light fixture by smashing Andrea’s guitar into it while taking the guitar off. Bonus calm points.)
