The Summons

For chapel this month, we were asked to bring songs that meant a lot to us or featured in our journey somehow. I chose “The Summons,” an old Scottish hymn, written by … I hadn’t heard of this song until about four or five years ago, when my buddy James came into the room gushing …

[tw/cw: spiritual abuse] Over the dozen years I'v [tw/cw: spiritual abuse]

Over the dozen years I've been in pastoral ministry, one of the biggest reasons that I've encountered for folks' disillusionment with God and faith and Jesus and Christianity is the chasm between what Jesus was like and what his followers — and especially those who claim to speak for him — are like.

It is hypocrisy, it is spiritual abuse, it is a lack of integrity, it is misuse of power and platform, it is exclusion and marginalization and oppression. These sins can so undercut the witness and words of Christians that it is no wonder people question whether Jesus actually makes any positive difference, whether Jesus is actually worth following.

A couple of weeks ago, I addressed this in a sermon on the Parable of the Tenants (Mark 12:1-12), because that is what Jesus was addressing — those who claim to speak for God but do what God would not do: engage in religious exclusion, economic oppression, and spiritual abuse.

It led me to share, for the first time in public, my own experience with spiritual abuse.

I hope this offers some healing for those in need.

Trying to build practices of testimony and remembe Trying to build practices of testimony and remembering God in our lives:

1) Where have you seen God at work this month?
2) What have you heard from God that you’re talking with you into next month?
So … it turns out the wrist I fractured playing So … it turns out the wrist I fractured playing soccer/football back in November didn’t heal sufficiently on its own so we had to stick a screw in. Bummed to have to reset the counter (had been itching to get back on the pitch) but grateful for the ability to get good care and for friends who advised me to not just shake it off. Gotta listen to our bodies and take care of them!
Wishing we didn’t have to try to hold celebratio Wishing we didn’t have to try to hold celebration and mourning at the same time. Grieving the Monterey Park shooting (yet another attack on the AAPI community) and the continuing gun sickness that so many Americans refuse to treat, and praying for those who lost loved ones. Lord, have mercy.

May this Lunar New Year bring prosperity in the form of life and safety. #yearoftherabbit
