I came across this poem yesterday by Jan Richardson, whose work I love (see her Ash Wednesday poem “Blessing the Dust” or her “Blessing for Waiting“, which I used during Advent). Wise women also came. The fire burned …

Proud to be at today’s @everytown rally and stand with students, moms (@momsdemand), survivors, and other local and national advocates for gun reform, including Rep. Lucy McBath, who lost her own son to gun violence, and faith leaders like @raychang502 (@aachristcollab) and @lrodwatson (@missioalliance and @christcitydc).

I was interviewed by a media outlet seeking a faith perspective. For me, this is what it means to live out the gospel and follow the example of Jesus: seeking to defend the image of God in all people, especially the most vulnerable. Rights and privileges matter, but responsibility and human life matter more.
This is what I said on Sunday at @christcitydc abo This is what I said on Sunday at @christcitydc about the LAST TWO shootings that took place less than two weeks ago. And it already needs ‘updating’ to name schools (again).

Places I lived before moving to the US: 23 years, 0 mass shootings* at schools.
Since moving to the US: 16 years, 12 mass shootings.

Which is to say: it doesn’t have to be this way. Thoughts and prayers aren’t meant to be an empty platitude but a recommitment to building a better world, especially for those who are coming after us. That’s what we mean when I, as a follower of Jesus, pray the words he taught us to pray about God’s kingdom of peace and justice coming on earth as in heaven.

So tired of this.

*Mass shootings are commonly defined as resulting in the death of four or more people, not including the perpetrator. This metric doesn’t include any school violence that falls below that line but is still devastating and traumatic.
